FAQ

Questions we get asked a lot.

Everything you need to know about working with JavaScript Instruments — from first conversation to shipped product.

WORKING WITH US

How do I get started?

Book a product audit. We spend 60 minutes reviewing your current product, architecture, and business goals, then give you a written summary of the highest-impact areas to address. There is no commitment and no sales pitch — just an honest assessment of where things stand.

What types of projects do you take on?

We specialise in rebuilds, rearchitectures, and production-readiness work. That means SaaS products that need to scale, mobile apps that need to be rebuilt properly, vibe-coded or AI-generated prototypes that need to be productionised, and founders preparing for a funding round who need investor-grade code. We also take greenfield builds for founders who want to start on solid foundations.

Do you work with non-technical founders?

Yes — and it is one of our most common engagements. We translate business requirements into technical decisions and keep you informed in plain language throughout. You do not need to understand the stack to work with us effectively.

Do you take on small projects?

Our minimum engagement is a product audit plus a defined scoped project. We do not take on single-day tasks or hourly support. Most engagements run between 4 and 16 weeks depending on scope.

Can you work with our existing team?

Yes. We can embed alongside your internal engineers, take full ownership of a specific feature area, or work entirely independently and hand off clean code. We adapt to whatever structure serves the project.

SCOPE & TIMELINES

How long does a typical project take?

A focused rebuild or rearchitecture typically takes 6 to 12 weeks. A full product redesign and rebuild is usually 12 to 20 weeks. AI MVP to production work — turning a working prototype into a deployed, maintainable system — often runs 4 to 8 weeks. We scope each project individually and give you a realistic timeline before signing, not after.

How do you handle scope changes?

We scope projects in phases where possible, which keeps scope changes manageable. If something changes materially mid-project, we discuss the impact on timeline and budget transparently before proceeding. We do not silently add hours.

Do you work in sprints or milestones?

We typically work in two-week delivery cycles with defined milestones and handoffs. You will always know what is being worked on, what has shipped, and what is next. We use linear workflows and keep you in the loop without overwhelming you with process overhead.

TECHNOLOGY

What technology stack do you use?

We build in React, Next.js, TypeScript, Node.js, and React Native. For databases we typically use PostgreSQL with Prisma. For infrastructure, Vercel, AWS, and Supabase depending on the project requirements. We choose the most appropriate tool for the problem — not the trendiest one.

Can you work with our existing tech stack?

If you are already on a JavaScript/TypeScript stack, almost certainly yes. If you are on a completely different language or framework, we are honest about the limits of our expertise rather than pretending to be good at everything.

Do you build AI features?

Yes. We integrate LLMs and AI APIs into production products — OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. We also specialise in taking AI-generated prototypes (built with tools like Lovable, Bolt, Cursor, or v0) and refactoring them into maintainable, scalable codebases.

Can you take over a codebase that was AI-generated?

Yes — this is an increasingly common engagement. AI coding tools produce functional prototypes quickly but often create architectural problems that compound as the product grows: missing error handling, no test coverage, scattered state management, and dependencies that make the codebase brittle. We audit the existing code, identify the structural issues, and rebuild the parts that need to be rebuilt — without throwing away what's working.

PRICING

How do you price projects?

We quote fixed-scope projects with a defined deliverable and price. For ongoing product development we offer monthly retainer arrangements. We do not quote hourly rates because they misalign incentives — we want to move fast and deliver value, not bill hours.

What is a product audit and does it cost anything?

A product audit is a 60-minute structured review of your current product and technical setup, followed by a written summary. The cost is listed on our booking page. If you proceed with a project from the audit, the audit fee is credited toward the project.

What is the typical investment for a project?

Most focused engagements start from $15,000. Full rebuilds and multi-phase rearchitectures typically range from $30,000 to $90,000 depending on complexity, team involvement, and timeline. We scope each project individually — book an audit to get an accurate picture for your specific situation.

AFTER THE PROJECT

Do you offer ongoing support after the project ends?

Yes. Most clients continue with a monthly retainer for ongoing feature development, maintenance, and technical direction after the initial project. We also offer a handoff-only model if you plan to hire an internal team to take over.

Will we own all the code?

Yes. All code we write for you is yours, with no licensing restrictions. We do not retain ownership of anything we build on your project.

Do you help with hiring engineers after the project?

We can advise on what to look for in a technical hire for your specific stack and help you evaluate candidates. We are not a recruiting agency, but we have helped many founders make their first or second engineering hire successfully.

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?

The fastest answer is a conversation.

Book a product audit and we will answer your specific questions in the context of your actual project.
